Green Lungs
Trees chosen for Delhi's air

Which tree should go here?

Search a place or paste coordinates. We match it to the nearest study site and plan its planting spaces.

Search above to see the planting spaces, the recommended species and how the plan plays out over twenty years.

The site

Ordered from most to least pressing. Every figure is an average or total taken from this site's own records.

    What to plant

The species that fit this site best

Ranked on how well each tree handles the pollution, heat and water conditions above, weighed against its survival, local suitability and cost.

Ranked best to worst for this site. Figures are per mature tree; cost is in rupees per tree.

    How they grow

    Benefits build slowly, then compound

Every impact is scaled by how much canopy a tree has reached and by how many saplings survive, so young plantings deliver little at first.

    What the plan delivers

The whole planting plan over twenty years

Spending is front-loaded: planting, saplings and guards come first, then maintenance falls to a low yearly amount while captured pollution keeps rising with canopy.

    Built on AWS

How Green Lungs runs on AWS

Green Lungs is deployed on AWS Elastic Beanstalk using Docker. Users can search for a location or enter coordinates, and the application matches the location to available environmental data and generates tree recommendations.

    →
AWS Elastic Beanstalk Runs the Green Lungs application packaged in a Docker container.
    →
Local datasets Environmental conditions, tree species and planting spaces
OpenStreetMap Nominatim Resolves place names into geographic coordinates
Green Lungs API Matches locations and generates tree recommendations
Environmental and tree datasets The application currently reads environmental, species and planting-space datasets from a local folder packaged with the application.
Location search Place-name geocoding uses OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Users can also enter geographic coordinates directly.
AWS Elastic Beanstalk and Docker Docker packages the application, and AWS Elastic Beanstalk runs it in the cloud.
Future improvements Amazon S3-based dataset storage, Amazon Location Service and additional AWS monitoring integrations could be added in future versions.
